Introduction of Underground Space Engineering Department

The Department of underground space engineering now has two specialties: underground construction engineering and urban underground space engineering. The underground construction engineering was established in 1993, developed and renamed from the tunneling engineering (1976). The urban underground space engineering was prepared for construction in 2017, and formal enrollment began in 2018. We have two post-doctoral stations in geological engineering and civil engineering, one first-level master's degree and doctoral degree in civil engineering, one second-level master's degree and doctoral degree in geological engineering, and three professional master's degree programs in architecture and civil engineering, geological engineering and engineering management.

The Department of underground space engineering has 26 full-time teachers, including 11 professors (11 doctoral supervisors), 13 associate professors, 2 lecturers and 1 full-time postdoctoral fellow. More than 96% of teachers in the department have doctoral degrees, and most of them have overseas study and exchange experience. Over the years, we have cultivated more than 1800 undergraduates, more than 200 master students and more than 50 doctoral students for our country. In the aspect of teaching, we have won a number of national, provincial and ministerial level teaching achievements of the first, second, third prize, and published more than 20 textbooks, monographs in recent years.

The Department of underground space engineering has outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research, and has undertaken a number of national and provincial scientific research projects, including the "973" project of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. In the field of underground engineering disaster prevention and control, engineering blasting in complex environment, large intelligent horizontal directional drilling machine, trenchless pipeline repair and other technical research, it ranks the leading level in China. Related scientific research projects are oriented towards national economy, and related technical service projects have been carried out for dozens of national, provincial and municipal key projects such as Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Longjin Stream Diversion Project, Jiantai expressway, Guzhu Expressway, Shifang Expressway and Shanghai-Rongxi Expressway. Our scientific research achievements have won the second and third prizes of national scientific and technological achievements, the first and second prizes of Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources, the second prize of Ministry of Education and the first, second and third prizes of Hubei Provincial scientific and technological achievements. At present, we carry out extensive international academic exchanges, and have established extensive academic contacts with academic institutions in the United States, Britain, Germany, Russia, Japan, Canada and other countries.

Through the school "Double First-rate", "211 engineering", "Competitive Discipline cultivation" and other series of discipline construction, the experimental conditions of underground space engineering department have been greatly developed. We have trenchless engineering laboratory, underground building simulation chamber, drilling and blasting laboratory, concrete laboratory and so on. These conditions provide an objective basis for teaching and research work and a reliable guarantee for the sustainable development of teaching and research.
